Hello journalism department,

I am a part-time lecturer here at London Met.
I run a PG cert. called PerformanceInnovations and wondered if there is a student who needs a project to work on. I could do with a bit of help getting some PR coverage on the course... to build up interest in the next course which will start in March 2012.
Any possibilities or thoughts?
Many thanks,
Jane Turner

[...] Share Facebook Twitter Email I remember sitting in my cousin’s house in Tonbridge reading his Star Wars annual. It must have been about 1984. And I remember a picture – Luke Skywalker and another cool-looking Han Solo-esque bloke with a moustache and cape standing on the desert planet of Tatooine. The only problem is, I had watched the first film hundreds of times (every day of a one particular summer. Seriously) and I couldn’t recall that scene being in the movie. That of course is one of the famous cut scenes from the original Star Wars – Luke and his childhood friend Biggs Darklighter chatting about the Imperial Academy and about how Biggs has decided to defect to the Rebel Alliance. In the final movie the scene was cut and Biggs ended up with only a brief appearance in the big X-Wing attack on the Death Star, getting blown up as he tried to defend his old chum.
That interview was terrible. Trust me, a writer hates nothing more than constantly being asked about the "film" adaption of their novel. The movie is someone else's work and she most likely has no say in what happens concerning the movie. She should have been asked more about HER work. And HER life as a writer. And HER plans for other projects. Literally all you talked about was the possibility of there being a movie.

Just sayin'.

I am so excited for Insurgent and I hope, like Veronica said, they use little-known actors and actresses. It'd be nice to see some fresh faces!

[...] Ben Falk interviewed Veronica. You can read an excerpt of the interview below, but for the entire thing, CLICK HERE. Is it potentially damaging that YA books are so popular for the movies right now that people might be writing them specifically because they think they’d be good films, rather than as a novel in their own right? Honestly, I don’t think this is a huge danger. First of all, making a movie is such a difficult process—there are no guarantees, especially if a book doesn’t sell well enough as a book, which should come first! Second of all, writing a book is such an involved process that it’s hard to get through one even if you love it for what it is, let alone if you’re just writing one so it can become something else. Basically, this would be like becoming a supermodel just so that you can become a fashion designer—becoming one is hard enough, let alone both, and they require a completely different set of skills. So I think that damaging scenario is possible, surely, but it would be rare and might not work out so well. [...]
